Taking the learner's perspective: NAIW 2023

The 2023 NAI Week - Academic Integrity: A Learner's Perspective - went well in October, with 80 to 100 attendees registered for each session. The four sessions are available to view below or on the QQI YouTube channel.

Monday

The Student Panel with USI VP Academic Affairs, Bryan O Mahony; PG student & NAIN member, Clodagh McGivern; MTU SU Education Officer, Oisin Gahan; DCU SU Academic Life Officer, Eoin Crossen. Moderated by NAIN member & Registrar Hibernia College - Elva Casey. This wide-ranging discussion enabled these student leaders to express student viewpoints and suggest some ways in which students may like to more the academic integrity conversation forward in their institutions.

Tuesday

A student of chemical engineering at Imperial College London, Stephanas Lim, gave a talk reflecting some findings of his research, titled UK Universities policy responses to Artificial Intelligence (AI) related academic misconduct in undergraduate studies. This was moderated by NAIN Steering Committee member, Aisling Reast, Head of Quality, RCSI. It was so good to hear from a student talking about academic integrity policies from the student viewpoint, and the speaker's research provided some illuminating insights.

Thursday

This was the day for a session on inclusivity and academic integrity given by Dr Mary Davis, Oxford Brookes University, titled Academic integrity is for everyone: strategies to include all students and staff in promoting and supporting academic integrity. Grainne Mooney, with her background in EDI and EDI policy development, moderated this session.

Friday

The final session with the NAIN Chair Billy Kelly explored some initial reflections based on an analysis of the 2023 Topical Module, Academic Integrity, in the Student Survey. It is so good to have some aggregate Irish data now and the analysis uncovered some very interesting possible trends and indicative student thinking (1st year, 4th year and PG). Seven HEIs chose to do this module in 2023, so hoping more select it in 2024 and a great opportunity to start looking at the data longitudinally as well.
