NAIN Masterclass with Helen Gniel

The next NAIN masterclass will take place on Tuesday 24th October at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Dublin. 

Titled Looking to the future (with a backwards glance): reflecting on recent developments in academic integrity, the impacts of Gen AI and current assessment challenges, this masterclass will be delivered by Helen Gniel, Director of the Higher Education Integrity Unit in TEQSA.

Offering a review of developments in the area of academic integrity (including current work and priorities at TEQSA), it will focus in particular on key learning points from the TEQSA masterclasses and the impact of GenAI, as well as the increasing importance of academic and research integrity in QA processes - and why awareness of this has grown recently and how it is being addressed in the Australian context.

Participants will be asked to reflect in advance of the session on questions such as:

• What impacts has GenAI had in your institution since the launch of ChatGPT and other publicly available LLMs, e.g., has your institution made any changes to its policies (in particular, academic integrity/assessment policies) since the launch of ChatGPT?

   

• What changes have you observed, since the launch of ChatGPT – either nationally or within your organisation/ institution – with regard to academic integrity and how it is approached, e.g., in the context of curriculum development?

   

• What changes, if any, are being considered in your institution re assessment? What are the reasons for these?

   

• In the context of the opportunities and challenges posed by GenAI, what developments would you ideally like to see in your institution/ organisation in the next 12-24 months?

   

• How do you think external quality assurance agencies, like QQI and TEQSA, can best support institutions, their learners and staff, to make any reforms needed to manage/ promote ethical practice in teaching, learning and assessment in the age of GenAI?

By raising key issues for discussion, NAIN hopes all participants will gain insights and ideas which can be shared within their institutions and organisations in relation to the Australian context and its similarities to the Irish tertiary education landscape in relation to academic integrity.
