Celebrating 20 years of the National Framework of Qualifications

2023 marks a key milestone for the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The Irish framework was the first of its kind in Europe and has become a cornerstone of the Irish qualifications system over the last twenty years.  During this year, we will reflect on the impact of the NFQ on the education and training landscape in Ireland and celebrate its success in helping to deliver learning pathways and opportunities for learners at all levels. 

We will host a special anniversary celebration on Friday 17 November to bring together the whole sector to mark what has been achieved through the creation of the NFQ. A number of projects led by QQI will also consider the trajectory of the NFQ to date while also looking to its future development.

20th anniversary report

QQI is commissioning a report which will reflect on achievements to date as well as opportunities for the future.  We are keen to hear perspectives and case studies from across the sector about the use and benefits of the NFQ over the years; we will issue a call for submissions in April or May. The final report will be launched at the NFQ 20th anniversary event on Friday 17 November. In the meantime, you can find out more about our planned report here.

Development of the IRQ

The Irish Register of Qualifications (IRQ) will continue to evolve this year. Designation of providers as having achieved the forthcoming international education mark or Listed Awarding Body status will be communicated through the IRQ. The IRQ will become the authoritative list of both quality-assured qualifications leading to awards on the NFQ and quality-assured English language programmes. This listing will be further enhanced by the formal recognition of the qualifications of designated awarding bodies such as universities and institutes of technology on the NFQ, achieved through the implementation of the Joint Sectoral Protocol. Future development will be informed by feedback gathered from the sector on the purpose, scope and audience of the IRQ.

Access Transfer and Progression study

A high-level study of Access Transfer and Progression practice in Ireland will feature case studies of effective practice to complement the existing ATP policy. It is expected that the study may identify gaps or weaknesses to inform future ATP development.
