The Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor T.D. announced the launch of QQI’s first review cycle for higher education institutions, named the CINNTE review cycle. 23 institutions (universities, institutes of technology and the RCSI) will be reviewed over the coming seven years. The reviews will be organised by QQI, the qualifications and quality assurance agency. Each review will be carried out by an independent team of international experts.
Acknowledging that this review cycle has a crucial role to play in contributing to quality in higher education, the Minister described the cycle as "our window into what happens inside our higher education institutions. It allows us to see in a very transparent way the manner in which quality assurance is supported and enhanced in the sector".
While Irish higher education institutions have primary responsibility for reviewing and improving their own quality, QQI is responsible for carrying out external review on a cyclical basis. The CINNTE review cycle, begins this month and will run for seven years until 2023.
During this time, QQI will organise and oversee independent reviews of each of the Universities, the Institutes of Technology and RCSI. Each review will be carried out by an international team of independent experts and peers, who will review the education and training provision, to ensure agreed quality standards are being met.
